| Industrial Directory Reports Alabama Manufacturing Jobs Down 2% |
|
Thursday, April 26 2007 @ 12:41 PM Etc/GMT

Alabama's manufacturing employment dropped 2% over the past 12 months according to the 2007 Alabama Manufacturers Register, a manufacturers directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI (http://www.manufacturersnews.com) reports Alabama lost 7,380 manufacturing jobs and 175 plants since March 2006.
"This is a trend we've seen in other states," said MNI President, Thomas Dubin. "Although manufacturing output is at record highs, industrial employment is stagnant or declining. This is partly the result of outsourcing, mergers and consolidation, but the nature of today's manufacturing also plays an important role. Fewer employees are needed due to automation and technology; instead of four assembly line workers, now you may have just one controlling the manufacturing process through a computer."
Northeast Alabama accounts for the most manufacturing activity with 52% or 181,485 of the state's jobs, with nearly half of these centered in Jefferson and Madison Counties. 19.5% or 70,422 of Alabama's industrial jobs are located in Southeast Alabama, while Northwest and Southwest Alabama account for 15.2% and 13.4%, respectively.

| Learn about gourds |
|
Thursday, April 26 2007 @ 05:58 AM Etc/GMT

Gourds are much more than birdhouses on poles these days.
You can learn about growing, crafting and decorating gourds for your home and garden at Gourd Education Day on Saturday.
This free event will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Jaycee Community Building at the Madison County Fairgrounds off Johnson Road/Airport Road in Huntsville.
The Huntsville Gourd Patch, a division of the American Gourd Society, will sponsor the spring meeting of the Alabama Gourd Society along with Gourd Education Day.
The event will feature demonstrations of gourd crafting (cleaning, carving, cutting, painting, wood burning and more) and a children's "make and take" corner, where for $2 they can make and decorate a gourd basket, birdhouse, rattle, dipper or mask.

The National Chicken Cooking Contest is coming to Birmingham next week, and that means lots of visitors to the city, lots of chicken cooking at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex and $100,000 to the winner of the competition, which will include one contestant from each state and the District of Columbia.
Not only is this a big event for the city, it also is an opportunity to show off Birmingham's brightest sides. The contest, sponsored by the National Chicken Council and the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association, will be hosted by the Alabama Poultry & Egg Association.
Elise Durbin, secretary-treasurer of Marshall Durbin Co., is chairman of the event, and has hundreds of volunteers helping out. Additionally, she has planned events for contestants and media guests during the two days of festivities.
