    Shortage of doctors hurts city
    STEVE DOYLE Times Staff Writer
Medicare patient faces hard search for primary care

Enid Torres didn't know that Huntsville had a doctor shortage until she tried to find one for her diabetic husband.

The Hazel Green resident said she was rejected by 27 physicians before calling internist Dr. Jeremy Russell, one of the few primary-care doctors in the city still taking Medicare patients such as Torres' husband, Marquez. Primary care includes adult internal medicine and family practice.

Do school buses need seat belts? Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
    Friday, July 13 2007 @ 03:11 PM Etc/GMT

    By GIL KLEIN
WASHINGTON - Seat belts that save many lives in cars may actually make school buses more dangerous - and much more costly, school officials said Wednesday.

"For the most part, lap belts provided entertainment for the kids," said Linda Farbry, director of transportation for Fairfax County, Va., public schools, who had been a school bus driver in the 1980s when the county tried them out. "They would use them as lariats to swing around and launch at other students."

Parents are pushing state legislatures to require school bus seat belts, and five states do. Yet several studies have indicated that seat belts would not make buses safer. School officials hope the federal government will draft seat-belt guidelines to help defuse what is often an emotional issue.

Though Sullivan Street has recently opened, another project has been put off five more years-and Madison officials aren't going to take it lightly.

The Metropolitan Planning Organization announced a new road list recently that would put off the widening of Old Madison Pike until 2012-a project that had previously been moved up to November of this year.

Brewery destroyed by fire scouts sites for new home Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Old mill, Madison, downtown on list;decision next week. Huntsville's Olde Towne Brewing Co. is looking uptown, downtown - even a neighboring town - for a new home.

The state's only microbrewery was destroyed July 5 in a predawn blaze.

Founder Don Alan Hankins is scouting numerous sites and hopes to make a final decision next week. Possibilities include the historic Lowe Mill building in west Huntsville, downtown Madison and a lot near Washington Street and Abingdon Avenue in Huntsville.

Hankins has a meeting next week with the Big Spring Partners downtown redevelopment group about other downtown locations. Mary Jane Caylor, Big Springs Partners' executive director, said a microbrewery is one of those unique operations that can help make any downtown a diverse and attractive place to do business.
