As real estate home sales continue to drop across the country, including formerly hot markets such as Southwest Florida, some parts of the nation seem to remain somewhat immune. One of them is just across the state line from Florida's Panhandle.

Though home sales in Alabama have experienced a modest decline, the state housing market remains ahead of national trends, according to a recent report by the Alabama Center for Real Estate.

Alabama's 19,290 nonprofit organizations employ more workers than the real estate, mining and utilities industries combined, according to a new study from the Nonprofit Resource Center of Alabama.

The 2007 Nonprofit Sector Report, to be released this week, shows that state nonprofits paid 71,724 employees more than $2.4 billion in 2006 and generated more than $1.92 million in state and local tax revenue that year.

The study looked at 2,200 square feet, four bedroom homes in 317 American markets. The average price of such a home in the Huntsville market was $212,183. That price was $232,375 in Mobile, the state's most expensive residential market, which makes a total gap of $20,192.
