    Thursday, December 13 2007 @ 10:31 AM Etc/GMT

Increasing housing prices are a mixed blessing. For homeowners and for businesses that benefit from home sales, they are a positive. For renters, they are a negative.

In the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, housing prices in the Decatur metropolitan statistical area increased by 7.2 percent. That was high enough to rank Decatur 22nd among the 287 metropolitan areas listed in a survey, released Nov. 29, by the U.S. Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight.

Home sales up in Shoals Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
    Tuesday, December 11 2007 @ 10:10 AM Etc/GMT

The housing market in the Shoals grew in October despite trends to the contrary in other parts of Alabama and the country.

While total home sales in Alabama declined by 12.25 percent in October compared to the same month a year ago, the Shoals housing market increased by almost 5 percent. The numbers are based on data collected by the Alabama Center for Real Estate at the University of Alabama.

"Our market is doing great," said Charlene Isbell, president of the Realtors Association of the Shoals. "We always have a good inventory of homes here, and people have so much to choose from. It's really a buyer's market."

Madison may get tough on builders Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
    Tuesday, December 11 2007 @ 10:02 AM Etc/GMT

MADISON - Erosion issues in some developing neighborhoods have the Madison City Council looking at enforcing stiff penalties for violators.

"If we have a handful of companies that are blatantly in violation, then we need to bring the hammer down on them," City Councilman Bob Wagner said at Monday night's council meeting. "And if that means taking away their business license until they do fix the problem, then maybe that's what we should consider."
