Huntsville, Auburn and Tuscaloosa ranked as some of the best places to start a small business by CNN Money.

Among CNN’s “Best Places to Launch” study, Huntsville, a high-technology hub with a population of 395,645, was ranked the No. 1 metro among midsized cities. The market’s small business growth rate was 9.4 percent between 2004 and 2007, higher than its growth rate average of 5.9 percent. Also, the city’s population grew 10.5 percent between 2003 and 2008.

Tuscaloosa and Auburn ranked No. 11 and No. 16 among small metro areas. The Auburn-Opelika area had a small business growth rate of 11.9 percent and Tuscaloosa’s growth rate was 4.9 percent.

Birmingham experienced a 4 percent population growth and a 5 percent small business growth rate, but the metro was not considered on the list as one of the best places for small business startups.
