The 2009 June Black Arts Festival is being cancelled due to the economic down turn that has impacted a majority of our national, regional and local sponsors.
The June Black Arts Festival started 20 years ago as a station promotion to have something for the traditional June Black Music Month Celebration. We coupled this promotion with our desire to further connect with our community and to provide financial support for the Harris Home for Children.
Since 1989 WEUP-AM/FM has strived to provide an outlet for local and regional talent to be showcased. Along with our local, regional, and national sponsors we have also provided nationally known artist to perform for the community at no cost to the public. But for the Black Arts Festival many in our community would not have had the opportunity to see these artists perform.
We sincerely thank our sponsors, vendors, participants, staff, constituents of the media and the many volunteers who assisted us in keeping this festival safe, positive and “free” to the public for the past 19 years.
Over the years, the various Mayors and city councilpersons of the City of Huntsville, Huntsville Police Department, Huntsville Fire Department, HEMSI, Madison County Commission and Sheriff’s Department, The Alabama Department of Transportation, and Alabama A&M University Athletics and Police Departments have provided invaluable suggestions and assistance allowing for the utmost in safety for the public and festival attendees.
We especially thank our fans and guests who attended the festival, some for the past nineteen years. You have helped to make this festival something to be proud of as we have welcomed family reunions and other gatherings with attendees from around the world.
And last but not least, to our neighbors on Jordan Lane and the surrounding areas, thank you for your spirit of support and cooperation.
To all our heartfelt thanks!!!
