The term credit repair letter covers a wide range of letters written to credit agencies or financial institutions regarding your credit. A credit repair letter sounds like one letter that is written to repair any problems you have with your credit. That is not what it is. In fact, writing one letter to fix all your credit problems is impossible. But the many types of credit repair letters can be helpful in repairing your credit and improving your credit scores.
Letter to Debt Collectors
A cease and desist letter is one type of credit repair letter. This is a letter that you would send to a debt collector or any creditor that is constantly calling you demanding payment. You have a legal right to require that they stop contacting you and they are legally obligated to abide by your wishes and stop contacting you. When you write a cease and desist letter there is no need to be rude or disrespectful. You should right the letter in a very professional way. It is not a personal letter it is a business letter.
A cease and desist letter should be sent certified mail with return receipt requested. You will need to keep a copy of your letter along with the return receipt as proof you wrote the letter and that it was received. If the matter must go further, possibly to court, you will need these copies when you present your case.
Not Sure About a Debt?
If payment is being demanded for a debt that you are not sure you owe you could write a credit repair letter called a debt validation letter. In this letter you are simply asking in very certain terms that the creditor send you some type of valid proof that this debt is yours to pay. This letter should also be sent certified mail return receipt requested and you should keep copies.
Errors on Your Credit Report
Each year you should request a free copy of your credit report from the three credit reporting agencies which are TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. They are obligated by law to provide you with a free report at least once a year. When you receive your report you should review it carefully to be sure that all the information being reported is correct.
If you notice an error on your credit report you will need to write a dispute letter to have the error corrected. In a dispute letter to respectfully explain the error you found on your credit report. There is no need to be rude or disrespectful. Just state the facts. Along with your letter include a copy of your credit report and clearly mark the error that you found.
