Huntsville Native Haiti Relief Organization

September 15th, 2008

My name is Simeon Nerelus. I am the president of HERO-Haiti Emergency Relief Organization and I also serve as an elder in at Madison Mission church in Huntsville, Alabama. This letter is an urgent appeal to individuals and communities on behalf of Haitian survivors of the last four hurricanes.

Within the past month, the island of Haiti where I am originally from was battered by hurricanes – Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike. This hurricane spree so far caused more than 300 deaths and 300,000 displaced people. The survivors face even greater threats of diseases and starvation.

Thank God! All HERO volunteers survived in the flood-plagued city of Gonaives. The Haitian survivors are in extreme emergencies. They need access to food, drinking water, and clothes.

Even when there is no catastrophe, Haiti is the third hungriest nation in the world. Every hour, a Haitian child dies of a preventable cause before reaching the age of five. Recent news articles have reported a situation so horrifying that some of the poor resort to eating dirt to survive.

Last October, HERO helped 35 families with scholarships for their children. HERO also donated school supplies and hygiene products to the children.

Pastor Nerelus and a team will leave for Haiti on October 10th to assess the situation, feed 200 families, and provide much-needed scholarships to 200 children.
HERO needs your support to enable us to address these emergencies.
