HandsOn Greater Huntsville/The Volunteer Center of Madison County is recruiting volunteers to help support Hurricane Gustav evacuees.

Volunteers are needed immediately in North Alabama, Birmingham, Montgomery and Clark counties, said Sheila McFerran, executive director of HandsOn Greater Huntsville.

To volunteer, sign up at www.volunteerhsv.org and indicate if you can deploy immediately.

Supplies are also in need: toiletries, towels, food, baby food and gas cards, McFerran said. Bring supplies to 109 A Jefferson St. North, Suite A, in Huntsville, or call 539-7797. She said the supplies are mostly in need in the Birmingham and Montgomery areas.

To donate money to relief organizations go to www.servealabama.org.

There are currently about 300 evacuees at Calhoun Community College in Limestone County and about 300 more at Snead State Community College in Boaz, and more are expected at Drake State Community College in Huntsville and Athens University in Athens, according to the Red Cross.
