How to market your travel website: How to increase backlinks PageRank and Website Traffic

A few months ago I had the opportunity to give a presentation to a group of entrepreneurs in the travel business on the subject of marketing your small business online. What I presented was generic as “how to create a website link” to the interesting and sometimes confusing subject of “how to market your business using social media”. I also took the moment to make references to key sales techniques in the brick and mortar world that are also applicable online. If you are not much into reading, I have taken the liberty of providing slides as well.

What a Sales Study Has Shown

  • 2% of sales are made on the 1st phone call
  • 3% percent on the 2nd phone call
  • 5% are made on the 3rd phone call
  • 10% are made on the 4th phone call
  • 80% are made on the 5th call
  • 48% of sales people quit on the 1st call 25% on the 2nd call and 12% on the 3rd call

Key things to remember when promoting you business

  • Domain name
  • Domain age
  • Website optimization
  • Link building
  • Article submission
  • Creating compelling content
  • Press releases
  • Blogs
  • Free Classifieds
  • Social Media

Domain Name: How to select a Domain Name for your business

Colors and words evoke emotions, and if the first subconscious response people have is one of alert, disgust, or confusion in most cases your name is probably not helping you sell. A domain name might be your most important online business decision.
domain name and registration
Here are 6 things to consider when buying a domain name:

  1. Short
  2. Memorable
  3. Related to the Business Name or Core Business
  4. Hard to misspell
  5. Contain no dashes
  6. Should be Top Level Domain

The Importance of the age of a Domain

age of domain nameWell-established sites have old domain names, so by reverse logic, an old domain should mean that the site is well established. Spammers register and drop domains quickly, thus spamming sites usually have newly registered domain names. While we are on the subject of spamming, please avoid .info domain extensions because it has been noted that spammers use mainly domains with this extension, partly because well establish sites registered the high TLD domain names such as .com, .net, .org etc.

What is a web page

<html>
<head>
<title> Travel to the Caribbean for free </title></head>
<meta name=”description” content=“Travel deals to the Caribbean. Cheap trip to Jamaica” />
<body>
<h1> Fabulous deals to Jamaica</h1>
<p> If you are considering taking a vacation to the Caribbean, but just don’t have the extra income to foot the bill, join YTB – sell travel to friends and family from the comfort of your home and gain a free trip to Jamaica and have a time of your life.</p>

</body>
</html>

As you can see from the above a web page consist of open html, head, title, meta name and body tags. <h1> means header one and <p> means new paragraph. Every thing between the opening body tag <body> and the closing body tag </body> are what you normally see when viewing a website.

The title tag <title> is the most important tag of your website. This is the first thing search engines like Google and Yahoo look for, which helps to determine your website relevance and how to rank your website. That is why it is important that if your article is about travel, that your title tags includes keywords such as “vacation, travel, cruise, destination, holiday” and so on.

The meta name description tag is also important as it gives search engines further clarification as to what your article is all about. It should be a brief summery with no more than 50 words.

If you take a closer look, you will notice that I added a few more words to the articles as well as a picture. In my quest to optimize the web page, so that it can be more friendly to search engines,  which will result in the site ranking higher, I have added key words that are frequently used by travelers; words such as “cheap travel” in the title tag. I have also added it to my link to be even more specific and keyword relevant.

I have also included an image to enhance the presentation of the page, but more importantly to seize the opportunity to add more keywords to the page using the image alt tag. It is through this tag that search engines  identify what images are about. Giving your image a name through alt tags increase the number of times your site shows up in Google image search as well.

5 P’s of Service Marketing

So many times you here professionals speak about the 4 P’s of  marketing (product, price, place and promotion), but seldom do you hear of the 5 P’s of service marketing. Odd, very odd, because about 75 percent of the U.S. market is based on service, not product.

I heard one of the greatest motivational speaker said that success is depended upon the number of people you are willing to serve . Here are the 5 P’s of service marketing. Remember, service online is the same as service off-line. Also, keep in mind the words of Maya Angelou: “Long after people forget what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”

  1. Tangibles
  2. Reliability
  3. Responsiveness
  4. Assurance
  5. Empathy

Writing and Submitting Articles for Back Links

One of the great ways to get links pointing towards your website from other websites is to write compelling relevant articles and submit them to article directories and press release sites with link pointing to your site embedded in each article. If your article is relevant and interesting other web masters will post it on their sites or make reference to your article on their web sites or blogs. The more links you have pointing to your site the higher your ranking in Google. This will also increase your traffic, and, ultimately have a positive impact on your business.
